Chapter Nine

Brick kept his eyes on the back window as Fletch drove their rental car back from Dallas. Roman had fallen asleep in the back seat almost immediately, and Brick could understand the adrenaline crash on top of some seriously long hours the man put in. They’d been watching him for the past few days and had Roman’s routine down.

The guy was up before dawn and at the office hours before anyone else even got out of bed. Most nights, he stayed later than anyone else. The only time he’d seen Roman take a break was for dinner with some over-inflated suit. Brick didn’t like it. The only saving grace was that Roman didn’t seem to have a good time either.

They’d decided on a rental because Brick’s vehicle was identifiable and would lead them back to the lake house. Of course, they didn’t rent one from Marshall as that was too close to home. They decided to move a couple of counties east before parking his truck and securing a rental car.

“See anything?” Fletch asked, never once taking his eyes off the road.

“No, we’re clear. No one’s following us.”

“That was close,” Fletch said in his normally booming voice, not worrying about waking Roman up.

“Shh, he’s sleeping.”

Fletch raised one bushy eyebrow and whispered, “Sorry.”

“Yeah, it was too damn close. If we hadn’t been waiting for him to come out of his building, Roman would have been killed in a hit and run. Like his other accidents, without witnesses or leads.”

“Yeah, that Detective didn’t have shit,” Fletch huffed. “What’s he been doing all this time?”

“Beats the shit out of me. I doubt he’ll be of any use to us.” Brick had to wonder about the guy.

“Yeah, I got that loud and clear,” Fletch huffed.

“We should be back home by seven this morning. I’ll give Spence a call. We need more information on Detective Moses.” The guy gave Brick a bad feeling, and early on, he’d learned to listen to his gut.

“Agreed. What do we do in the meantime?”

“Protect Roman until we figure out who’s after him.”

“Then what?” Fletch asked.

“We return to our previously scheduled programming,” Brick said as non-committal as possible.

Fletch glanced over at him with a doubtful expression. “Right.”

The first couple of days working remotely had been a lesson in patience, considering all the moving parts. Meetings were held virtually in his room/office in front of a white sheet hanging from thumbtacks. He’d gotten a crash course on all the ways his communications could be tracked, and all the precautions he’d have to take to work remotely. Brick and Fletch had destroyed his cell phone in the Dallas parking garage and threw it in a trash bin. Rick kept him up to date and on track via copious and detailed emails, none of which Roman answered directly. All return communications to Rick were sent to cloud storage, which he then downloaded. Spence rerouted Roman’s Skype and Zoom meetings so if back-traced, it looked like he was in Alaska. If whoever was
